Ten tips to help you print way better screenprints

We worked with Craft Brew to reimagine their brand. New coffee merch, stickers, coffee bag design, graphic tees and a whole lot more.

Designing for screenprinting is a nuanced art that requires a delicate balance between creativity and technical precision. To ensure your designs come to life vibrantly and accurately on fabric, it’s crucial to consider several key factors throughout the design process.

First and foremost, vector graphics serve as the foundation for successful screenprinted designs. Vector-based graphics, created using programs like Adobe Illustrator, retain their crispness and clarity regardless of size. This is essential for screenprinting, as it guarantees sharp, clean lines that will reproduce faithfully onto fabric.

Ding ding, we have a new brand! We selected a color palette that evokes warmth and depth, inviting customers to immerse themselves in the brand.

    Working with colors

When selecting colors for your design, it’s important to be mindful of the limitations of the screenprinting process. Screenprinting typically involves a restricted color palette due to the number of screens used. To streamline the printing process and minimize costs, consider simplifying your design by limiting the number of colors. Spot colors or Pantone colors can help maintain color accuracy and consistency across prints.

Incorporating halftones and gradients into your design can add depth and dimension without increasing printing costs. Halftones, in particular, allow you to simulate additional colors by varying the density of ink dots. Experimenting with different halftone patterns and densities can help achieve the desired visual effect while preserving the integrity of your design.

    Prepare your artwork

When preparing your artwork for screenprinting, it’s essential to consider the characteristics of both the fabric and the ink being used. Different fabrics and ink types may require adjustments to your design, such as altering the ink coverage or adjusting the artwork’s scale to accommodate the fabric’s texture. Additionally, mindful placement of your design on the garment is crucial for ensuring visual balance and wearability.

Throughout the design process, maintaining open communication with your screenprinter is key. Discussing your design specifications, preferred ink colors, and any other relevant details will help ensure a smooth printing process and satisfactory results. Requesting test prints before final production allows you to identify any potential issues and make necessary adjustments to achieve the desired outcome.
